Fix missing microphone audio in an Eavesy recording

Check microphone access, input selection, capture mode, and the saved audio before retrying a longer recording.

First listen to the saved audio. Missing text does not always mean missing microphone sound: capture can succeed while recognition is unavailable, inaccurate, or still processing. Diagnose the recording and its transcript separately.

Check the physical input

Open macOS Sound settings and choose the microphone you expect to use. Speak and check the input level. Confirm the device is not muted and that a headset or external microphone has not disconnected. Bluetooth and USB device changes can alter routing.

If macOS itself receives no signal, fix that before restarting a long Eavesy session. Move closer to the microphone and reduce competing audio for the short test.

Check permissions

In System Settings → Privacy & Security, review Microphone access for Eavesy. Meeting and Video can also need Screen Recording or system-audio access. On-device captions use Speech Recognition. Automatic pasting uses Accessibility, which is a different permission from audio capture.

After changing permissions, follow any macOS restart prompt and reopen Eavesy if needed. Permission names can differ by OS version; check the current Apple privacy guidance if you cannot find the control.

Make a small recording

Use Talk to isolate the microphone. Say a unique sentence, stop after ten seconds, and play back the audio from that capture. If it is audible, repeat in Meeting or Video, the mode used when the failure occurred. Add computer sound only after microphone capture works on its own.

A moving recording timer proves that a session started, not that usable sound reached the saved file. Playback is the useful check.

If the sound is there but text is missing

Check whether the capture is still processing, whether you are signed in for cloud transcription, and whether on-device recognition is available and permitted. Review the spoken-language setting. Do not delete the original audio while investigating.

For support, record the Eavesy version, macOS version, input device, capture mode, whether playback has your voice, and any visible error. Avoid sending a private meeting merely to demonstrate the problem; a short synthetic test is usually enough.

Keep capture and recognition separate

SymptomWhat it tells youNext step
macOS input meter stays flatThe selected input may not be receiving your voiceCheck device, connection, and mute
Saved audio is silentThe capture did not retain useful microphone soundRecheck permissions and make a Talk test
Saved audio is clear, captions absentAudio capture worked; recognition needs investigationCheck recognition permission and availability
Captions appear, final transcript pendingPreliminary recognition and cloud processing are separateCheck sign-in and processing state

Do not use a quiet indicator by itself as proof of a failure: silence while you are not speaking can be normal. Speak a distinct phrase and verify the saved result.

This report lets support distinguish a device-routing issue from a processing issue without needing your private meeting. Include a short synthetic recording only when it helps reproduce the problem.
